Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson said Cleveland had been expecting to sign LeBron James, who instead joined the 76ers on a two-year, $8 million deal with a player option. Cleveland was one of five finalists with Minnesota, Miami, Golden State and Philadelphia, and the only one James visited. The Cavs pivoted to a sign-and-trade for Peyton Watson, sending Max Strus, Dennis Schroder, Tre Mann and a 2031 unprotected first-round pick to Denver. Hours later, the Sixers came back from 29 down to beat them.
